OTHER NEWS
Houston we may have another problem! The head of the European Space Agency, Jean-Jacques Dordain claims missions to the International Space Station are in chaos because the different nations who use it have failed to agree on how to transport supplies and astronauts to and from it. From July, Russia will be the only country with a system that can carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS) due to the phase-out of the US space shuttle.

We haven't heard a lot on the "Star Trek 2" front, what with director J.J. Abrams
spending his time promoting "Super 8", however William Shatner does have some news about the sequel: he won't be in it. Shatner. who was a little peeved about not getting a cameo in the first movie announced his non-involvement at the Calgary Comic Expo during a Q+A session. Former Trek star Leonard Nimoy will also not be returning for the franchise's next film.

Actor James McAvoy Says "3-D is a waste of money"! McAvoy says he was relieved when his current movie "X-Men: First Class" wasn’t shot in or converted to 3-D. "Thank God this movie is not in 3D, which is just an excuse to charge an extra ten bucks at the theater,” McAvoy said. “Then in the end, they’re not 3D at all. The idea of things coming out of the screen and making you jump out your seat are done very well, but I think it’s a waste of time and money and I wouldn’t pay for a ticket to go to one of those films.”

For all their promise for future space propulsion schemes, plasma drives have had a hard time gaining momentum, however a $3.1 million grant to Australian National University physicists aims to change that. Unlike chemical rockets that require huge amounts of propellant to achieve thrust, plasma engines can produce high exhaust velocities from relatively minuscule amounts of fuel. However, plasma drives aren’t powerful enough to lift payloads from Earth. So the  idea is to place satellites or spacecraft in space on the backs of chemical rockets, then allow plasma drives to take over propulsion once there.

Writer Harlan Ellison will be inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame on Saturday, honoring a career that has spanned more than five decades in which he's made contributions to literature, television and film. The award, coming 55 years after Ellison began his writing career, celebrates the achievements of a writer who has nearly done it all; collecting 10 Hugo awards, three Nebula awards, 18 Locus Poll awards, the Bradbury award, six Bram Stoker awards, the Edgar Allan Poe award and two George Melies film awards.

SCIFI NEWS QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Our sun is one of 100 billion stars in our galaxy. Our galaxy is one of billions of galaxies populating the universe. It would be the height of presumption to think we are the only living things in this enormous immensity. - Wernher von Braun,
