OTHER NEWS
There is no commitment yet, and really not very many pitches, but former "Stargate: Universe" visual effects supervisor Mark Savela says he has a television show concept in mind that will shake up the genre community. "Echoes" is set on Earth, one ravaged not by humans, but by a pair of warring aliens who decided that Earth was a neutral battlefield. It's basically a story of humans picking up the pieces, a mess they didn't even create.

Jeff Bridges says that he’d like to be part of the big-screen adaptation of Lois Lowery’s "The Giver". The novel follows a 12-year-old boy in a futuristic utopian society that has deleted all human memory and emotional depth, described as "Sameness". The boy is then appointed as the "Receiver of Memory", storing all the original memories before the deletion in case they are required for community decisions that the citizens are no longer able to make.

Captain America Director Joe Johnson says he’d like to revisit "The Rocketeer". "The film didn’t do as well at the box office as we all hoped, but it has endured and generated a following. It was great fun and I’d love to re-explore Cliff Secord’s world." The original starred Billy Campbell and Jennifer Connolly.

TNT’s "Falling Skies" was down 29 percent from its premiere. Considering the shows  debut was the   most watched new cable show this year, this is still a strong number. TNT says the show “is expected to settle in over the next couple of weeks as the series finds its regular fan base.

Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilizations within the next two decades said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences Applied Astronomy Institute. Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10% of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth. If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head. "They may have different colour skin, but even we have that," he said.

The near-miss this week between the International Space Station and a piece of space junk highlights the growing threat posed by the huge cloud of debris whizzing around Earth. The piece of space debris came within 335 meters of space station on best estimate forcing the outpost's six astronauts to take shelter in two docked Russian Soyuz lifeboats for only the second time ever.

Fusion power has long been the dream of those seeking endless energy supplies, although previous efforts have been weak at best. Now NASA scientist John J. Chapman is proposing a new form of fusion-based energy to power a deep space probe. At a symposium on fusion engineering this week Chapman proposed a boron-based fusion motor. Boron is abundant on the Earth, and if a few grams of the stuff can drive a spaceship to Mars and beyond. Chapman says it could take a decade of work to build a functional spacecraft powered by this method.

SCIFI NEWS QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"With every passing hour our solar system comes forty-three thousand miles closer to globular cluster M13 in the constellation Hercules, and still there are some misfits who continue to insist that there is no such thing as progress."  - Ransom K. Ferm.
